Master Duel Post-WCQ Banlist Knocks Kewl Tune Down a Notch
The post-World Championship Qualifiers hangover is finally over, and Konami did not waste any time cleaning up the mess. The latest Master Duel Forbidden/Limited list, announced on June 24 and put into effect on June 30, went straight for the throat of the format's most suffocating deck. Yes, we are talking about Kewl Tune. The qualifiers saw the deck absolutely dominate the ladder, giving competitive grinders like Joshua Schmidt absolute hell before Konami finally pulled the trigger. If you spent the qualifiers getting your board modulated into oblivion, you can finally breathe a small sigh of relief.
Konami's hits to the archetype are all about chipping away at its obscene consistency. The deck's primary engine driver, Kewl Tune Rotary, has been dropped to a single copy. To round out the damage, both Kewl Tune Reco and Kewl Tune Mix are taking a seat at two copies each. While these hits do not completely bury the deck, and their main Synchro monsters remain untouched, it forces the strategy to rely on far less optimal extenders. You are going to see a lot of players trying to jam in cards like Over Tuning just to salvage their combo lines, which makes them far more vulnerable to a well-timed hand trap.
Outside of the Kewl Tune massacre, the list made a couple of interesting choices for the broader meta. Super Polymerization is dropping to two copies, matching its current standing in other formats and taking a bit of the sting out of blind-second boards. On the flip side, Synchro players get a massive toy back with T.G. Hyper Librarian moving all the way to three. Unlimiting the Librarian is a wild choice that practically begs someone to break the game with a degenerate deep-draw combo, but at least it gives rogue players something to cook with while the top tier recovers.
