Kewl Tune and Chaos Rituals Rule YCS Montreal

If you thought the summer heat was going to cool down the TCG meta, think again. Day 1 of YCS Montreal wrapped up last night with over 800 duelists packing the convention center, and the tournament landscape is exactly the high-stakes, combo-heavy environment we predicted. Running both the Genesys and Advanced formats simultaneously has made for a hectic weekend, but it is the Advanced main event that has everyone talking. As we head into Day 2, only three duelists managed to claw their way to a flawless 8-0 record. Francisco Andres Osorio Bobadilla, George Lucas Sacco, and Kevin Zuger stand alone at the top of the Swiss standings with a perfect 24 points, proving that piloting through this meat grinder of a format takes serious mechanical discipline.
The top table breakdowns from Round 8 paint a clear picture of what you need to beat if you want to win a premier event right now. Kewl Tune remains the absolute deck to beat, occupying nine of the top 20 tables as Swiss wrapped up. Its ridiculous Synchro-climbing capabilities, spearheaded by the absurdly consistent Kewl Tune Cue and boss monsters like Kewl Tune RS, are keeping the rest of the meta on life support. But it is not a one-horse race. The newly minted Light and Darkness Ritual engine from the Chaos Origins set is hot on its heels. Six duelists rode the Chaos wave to the top tables, utilizing the Branded engine to dump and recycle Magician of Dark Chaos - Black Chaos and Black Luster Soldier - Soldier of Light and Darkness.
Right behind the frontrunners, Elfnote and Mitsurugi are keeping the pressure on with six and four top-table representatives respectively. Elfnote builds utilizing Elfnote Lucina are showing incredible resilience against hand traps, while Mitsurugi continues to rely on its complex, high-skill ceiling Ritual plays to lock opponents out. The rest of the top cut is a wild mix of Dogmatika Despia Branded, Sky Striker, and even pocket picks like Azamina Orcust and Ryzeal Blitzclique. With five more Swiss rounds today before the cut to Top 8, these bubble players are going to have to play perfectly. If you are sitting on 21 points like Xavier LeBlanc or Wei Li, there is zero room for error. One bad opening hand against Kewl Tune, and your tournament is over.
