Master Duel Bans Called by the Grave in Massive Shakeup

Konami finally did the unthinkable on September 3, 2026, by sending Called by the Grave straight to the Forbidden list in Master Duel. For years, we've treated this card as a mandatory, albeit limited, safety net against the turn-ending hand traps that dominate best-of-one play. Now, that safety net is completely gone. Stripping away our most reliable answer to a resolving Maxx 'C' or Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring going first has sent shockwaves through the ranked ladder. If you want to play a combo-heavy strategy, you'll have to pray you open with Crossout Designator or simply accept that your turns are going to get cut short far more often.
While combo players are busy mourning their lost protection, Tearlaments pilots are actively celebrating. The very same banlist update pushed Tearlaments Havnis from limited straight to unlimited. Having Havnis at three copies means turn-zero plays are more consistent than they've been in a long time. Even with several of their core cards still locked in the banlist dungeon, the extra copies of Havnis give graveyard strategies a serious shot in the arm. It feels like Konami wants to encourage high-interaction graveyard play, even if it means forcing us to play around cards like Droll & Lock Bird or Dimension Shifter without a quick-play spell to bail us out. Meanwhile, the Dracotail engine took a minor hit to its consistency, with both Dracotail Mululu and Ketu Dracotail getting bumped down to semi-limited status.
If there is any silver lining to the loss of Called by the Grave, it's how Konami is handling the digital cosmetics. Since the card had a popular alternative artwork, players who dismantle their copy are receiving an Alt Art Ticket. Honestly, it's a fair trade. You can swap your banned staple for other gorgeous pursuits like Lady Labrynth of the Silver Castle. Still, no amount of shiny cardboard can completely mask the sting of staring down a resolved turn-one bug with nothing in hand to stop it. We are officially in an unprotected era of hand-trap warfare, and your ranked climb is about to get a lot more hostile.
