Jerry Zhang Wins Oceania WCQ with 60-Card Pile

You can play a lean 40-card deck to optimize consistency, or you can jam every powerhouse engine from the last two years into a massive pile and just trust your draws. Jerry Zhang went with the latter path and walked out of Melbourne as the 2026 Oceania World Championship Qualifier champion. Piloting an absolute behemoth of a 60-card pile, Zhang mashed together the raw value of the Mitsurugi and Fiendsmith engines, the grind game of Yummy, and the high-impact ceiling of the newly released Light and Darkness Ritual. It is a deck that defies the old-school rule of keeping your deck list tight, but in a format where every top-decked engine card is a full-combo starter, consistency takes on a completely different meaning.
The grand finals match against Melbourne local Dillon Taylor showcased exactly how high the stakes were for a ticket to Tokyo. Taylor, playing a highly technical Artmage build focused around Artmage Power Patron, took Game 1 after assembling a massive, unbreakable field of fusions. Zhang managed to grind his way to a win in Game 2 to force a decider. Game 3 came down to the absolute wire. Taylor opened with a somewhat mediocre hand and attempted to protect a modest board using both Solemn Judgment and Solemn Accusation. Paying half his Life Points twice left him at a lethal 1,000 Life Points, allowing Zhang's heavy-hitting Chaos engines to easily seal the match.
Behind the top two, the rest of the 299-player field fell in line with what is quickly becoming a settled metagame. In the bronze playoff, Stephen Medhurst secured the alternate invite slot with Kewl Tune, taking down Frankie Lin and his Branded deck. Meanwhile, the parallel 115-player Genesys Championship on Friday turned into an absolute bloodbath. Isaac Stott took down the tournament over Jack Lovett in a Blitzclique mirror match. In fact, the entire top four of the Genesys bracket was a Blitzclique sweep, leaving no doubt about which strategy players need to target if they want to survive the upcoming format.
